In addition to the handshake photograph taken on stage, GradImages was the pioneer in adding additional photographer positions to commencement ceremonies. This is a better option for schools, as it allows us to provide additional image choices to graduates and their families.
Ceremony portraits and close-up portraits are both great poses to supplement the traditional handshake photograph. However, there is often a question as to what the background should be for a ceremony portrait or close-up portrait. In many cases, the answer is simply a professional portrait backdrop. However, depending on your venue and the amount of available space, another interesting option may be the use of the ceremony environment as the background.
A gallery of sample images where the commencement itself served as a portrait backdrop can be found below:
The professional photographers at GradImages evaluate several factors when deciding whether or not the ceremony setting would be a suitable portrait background. These items include, but are not limited to:
- Amount of ambient lighting in the background;
- Amount of space available on the venue floor;
- Ample distance between the graduates being photographed and the graduates seated behind them, if applicable.
If all the conditions are perfect, and a skilled commencement photographer is able to frame each graduate in such a way so that the background does not detract from the image, then this is can be a very spirited and emotional photograph.
If you are a GradImages client and would like additional information about incorporating this type of image into your commencement ceremony photography, please contact your local field manager or account manager today. We will be glad to review the details of your ceremony and venue to determine if this can be accomplished.
