GradImages was one of the first companies to utilize green screen technology at commencement ceremonies. By taking a ceremony portrait of each graduate in front of a green screen backdrop, either immediately before or after being recognized on stage, we are then able to render each individual's image onto multiple backgrounds. This provides additional image option choices to graduates and their families.
Green screen technology, also referred to as chroma key, has been used for many years in the film, television, and photography industries. There have actually been several iterations of this technology dating back many decades. Today, however, the term refers to using computer software to layer some elements of a foreground image or video on top of a background image or video.
The phrase "some elements" is important because there needs to be a way for the software to know which parts of the foreground image to remove so that the background can be seen behind it. That is where the bright green color comes into play. When evaluating a foreground image, the software searches specifically for that bright green color and converts those pixels into transparency. Then, when the foreground is layered on top of the background, it is this transparency that allows the background to be seen around what remains of the foreground. This effect gives the viewer the perception that the foreground and background were both part of the same original image.
Even though GradImages has more experience with green screens at commencement than any of our competitors, we are the first to ackwnoledge that this technology is not a good fit for most ceremonies. Even if you can ignore the unattractive, bright green backdrop next to your otherwise beautiful ceremony stage, there are still some significant obstacles to overcome with respect to the graduates' regalia and clothing which affect image quality, and are outside of the photographer's control.
If you are a GradImages client interested in using a green screen, please reach out to your account manager or field manager. Our goal is to provide the best possible service to you, your graduates, and their families, so we would be happy to discuss the specifics of your ceremony to help determine whether green screen is a viable option for your commencement.
